Rules and Grub
27 July 2010Throwing a home poker game is a great way to get a bunch of buddies together for a solid night of fun and competition, but it can quickly devolve into an evening of contention, misunderstanding, and general unpleasantry. It’s a nice break from your standard poker online tournament. I’ve seen more than one game almost come to blows over matters that could have been settled with a simple explanation before the game begins. To make sure that your home game is an enjoyable experience from beginning to end, consider the two biggest sources of frustration: not knowing the rules and wondering where the food is.
1. Rules: Before the game starts, make sure that you know the rules and that your guests know them as well. Decide what the blinds and the payouts are going to be as well as how the re-buys and blind raises will work, and make sure your guests are clear on it.
2. Food: Nothing fouls a mood like low blood sugar-if you’re not providing a meal, keep a lot of snacks handy. Keep the snacks as simple as possible-nothing that spills or leaves hands too messy. Chips are fine, but keep the dip clear of the table, and pizza, while greasy, is essentially spill proof. And provide napkins, lots of napkins-nobody wants to handle sticky/greasy cards.
But of course you should beef up your skill on the poker online table.
